Why Essential Studies
The Essential Studies Program at Chadron State provides an integrated, coherent learning experience to prepare students for a life of responsible inquiry. ESP is built on institutional learning outcomes that answer the fundamental question, "what should all undergraduate students - irrespective of their majors and career aspirations - know or be able to do upon graduation?"
Key Components
The Essential Studies program is comprised of 33 hours distributed across the following key areas:
- INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING: Three credit hours of inquiry-guided learning, preferably taken in the student's first year.
- COMMUNICATION AND EXPRESSION: Nine credit hours focused on written and oral communication, and the creative arts.
- LOGICAL REASONING: Six credit hours focused on math and science.
- SOCIETAL AND HUMAN PERSPECTIVES: Nine credit hours focused on humanities, social sciences, and diversity.
- PERSONAL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Six credit hours focused on ethics, civil engagement, and wellness.
