Jazz concert at CSC Saturday night

Chadron State music chapter named state's best

For the first time, 91���� has been named the outstanding collegiate chapter of Music Educators National Conference. The honor was presented Nov. 19 at the Nebraska Music Educators Association meeting.

Business honorary chapter installed at Chadron State

Chadron State to be honored at national convention

91���� will be in the spotlight this week at the National Rural Education Association's annual convention in Indianapolis. The college will receive an award as will one of its professors and a CSC graduate. About 500 are expected to attend the convention.

Opera singer from Chadron to receive major award

The opera career of 91���� graduate Don Sherrill continues to flourish. It was announced last week that he will receive the Summer Opera Guild’s Artist of the Year Award for his portrayal of the villain, Iago, in the Italian version of “Otello” by G. Verdi in Washington, D.C., this summer.

Community music groups forming

New IT professor at Chadron State

Dr. Mike Courbat is a new assistant professor of industrial technology at 91����, replacing Dr. Lee Moeller, who retired after more than 30 years at the college.

CSC hires accounting professor

A native of California with extensive experience in education and business is a new assistant professor of accounting at 91����.

CSC presidential search committee named

Eleven members of the 91���� staff and one student have been appointed to serve on the college’s Presidential Search Committee. The committee also includes Clyde Franklin, the director of the Pine Ridge Job Corps Center.

CSC launches new school year

The introduction of 15 new professional staff members opened the new school year at 91���� Friday morning. Photos of several others who have accepted new responsibilities also were shown on a large screen in the Student Center.

Crouse appointed interim dean

A 25-year member of the 91���� faculty and a former dean, Dr. Margaret Crouse, has been named interim dean of the School of Professional and Graduate Studies at CSC. Her appointment is for two years.

Retired professor donates physics books

Just in time for the start of the new school year, the physics program at 91���� received a huge boost when a retired professor at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City delivered 12 boxes of books pertaining to the discipline late last week.

Many activities set to help new students succeed

An array of activities both before and after classes begin have been scheduled to help 91���� students get the school year off to a good start. Classes will begin Monday, Aug. 23.

CSC to offer rural education course

91���� will offer a rural school education course on-line during the fall semester. It will be taught by Dr. Clark Gardener, CSC professor of education and a member of the executive board of the National Rural School Association.

Optimism at CSC as new term nears

There’s an optimistic outlook as 91���� prepares for the new school year. Activities for both college personnel and new students will take place late next week with classes beginning Monday, Aug. 23 both on campus and at the off-campus sites.

CSC projects nearing completion

Two major physical improvement projects are nearing the finish line and several other projects are in the works or are being planned at 91���� as the new school year approaches.

CSC part of new health center

91���� is among the partners in the Panhandle Area Health Education Center that will open Sept. 1 in Scottsbluff to improve health care services in 14 western Nebraska counties. The counties involved include Box Butte, Dawes, Sheridan and Sioux.

A native of North Dakota is a new microbiology instructor at 91����.

CSC hires education professor

A new assistant professor of elementary education has been hired at 91����. She is Karen Enos, who hopes to complete her doctorate at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion next summer.

New CSC dean plans to listen and learn

Dr. Robert Stack said he loves teaching mathematics, but when the opportunity to test the waters in administration occurred early this summer, he jumped at it. Thus, Stack is now the interim dean of students at 91����.

New multicultural counselor at CSC

A new multicultural counselor has begun working at 91����. He is Aaron Grow, who was born at Osmond, Neb., but has lived much of his life in Kearney. He graduated from Kearney High School and received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

CSC professor places in drumming competition

A 91���� music professor recently proved that he has fast hands. Dr. Sandy Schaefer placed third in the “Battle of the Hands” at a contest for drum players in Nashville, Tenn., in late July.

July courses set at CSC

All of the courses scheduled for the July session of summer school at 91���� have met the minimum enrollment requirements and will be offered. The session begins Monday, July 5. A number of the courses will run through the end of the month, but several one- and two-week workshops also are scheduled.

CSC veterans exhibit to be in Crawford

91����’s World War II Veterans Exhibition, which features student writing and photography, will be displayed in Crawford this week during the Old West Trails Rodeo celebration and throughout most of the month of July.

More than 400 make Dean's List at Chadron State

More than 400 students made the Dean’s List at 91���� during the spring semester. The Dean’s List requires a grade point average of at least 3.5 on the 4.0 scale while carrying at least 12 hours of coursework. These honor students are in addition to the 246 who made the President’s List by earning all A’s.

A total of 246 students have made the Presidents’s Honors List at 91���� during the spring semester by earning all A’s while carrying at least 12 credit hours of coursework.

New CSC summer session begins June 7

91���� will offer approximately 35 courses during its second session of summer school that begins Monday, June 7. Most of the courses will run through July 2, although some of them are of a shorter duration.

Math educator hired at Chadron State

Beth Wentworth of Spring Lake Park, Minn., has been hired to be assistant professor of mathematical education at 91����. She will begin teaching at Chadron State this fall.

Church conference at Chadron State

At least 200 participants are expected at the annual meeting of the Nebraska Conference of the United Church of Christ on the 91���� campus Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 4-6.

Professor to head state group

A 91���� education professor, Dr. Don King, was elected president of the Nebraska Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. He will assume the duties at the organization’s quarterly meeting at Wayne State College in June.

Literature course has regional interest

A special topics distance learning course at 91���� in June will feature content with regional interest. The senior-level course, Literature of the American West, will meet in Chadron, Scottsbluff, Alliance and Sidney. It will be Mondays and Wednesdays, 3 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. beginning June 7 and ending July 2.

Ivy Day royalty crowned at Chadron State

Seniors Angie Meiergerd of West Point and Zane Vapenik of Elsie were crowned the Ivy Day royalty at 91���� Friday night. Meiergerd is an environmental biology major and will remain at CSC this coming year to work on her master’s degree. Vapenik is an industrial technology major and will teach that subject at Maywood High School this fall.

Honors program changes include public participation

CSC changes student classification

It will take a little more coursework for freshmen at 91���� to become sophomores beginning this fall. Entering freshmen at Chadron State will be encouraged to make progress toward their degree at a more consistent pace.

Rapid City couple collides in chess finals

Terry Likens of Rapid City won the CSC Open Chess Tournament for the fourth time in a row and the sixth time overall this spring. His wife, Jill Way Likens, was the runner-up this year.

Group visits coal fields

Three 91���� students and two professors, Dr. Chuck Butterfield in agriculture and Dr. Mike Leite in geology, spent a couple of days during the recent spring break learning about the effects of coal mining and coal bed methane development on water and rangelands in the Gillette area.

An article by Wendy Waugh, 91���� associate professor of business and economics, has been accepted for publication in the next issue of the NABTE Review, published by the National Association for Business Teacher Education. The article is titled “Using Personal Attributes to Predict Technology Adoption: A Study of College Faculty.”

Retired Chadron State educator dies

Services for one of Chadron State’s best-known retired faculty members, Dr. Elizabeth (Betty) Jacobson McCawley, were Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Grace Episcopal Church. She died early Tuesday, Jan. 13 at the Chadron Community Hospital following a brief illness. She was 90.

Renovation of Chadron State residence hall to begin soon

Work is expected to begin soon on the renovation of Edna Work Hall and Wing, the large rambling residence hall on the west side of the 91���� campus. As the new year opens, the renovation is one of four capital improvement projects underway or about to begin at CSC.
