Affordability is goal of compact by governor, colleges, university

Gov. Dave Heineman announced Monday that he has joined the Nebraska State College System and the University of Nebraska in a proposed compact to help ensure continued affordable access to higher education for Nebraska students and families.

Governor appoints NSCS board members

(Lincoln, Neb.) Governor Heineman recently appointed John Chaney of Auburn to the Nebraska State College System (NSCS) Board of Trustees. Chaney replaces Larry Teahon of Chadron who stepped down after serving on the Board for twelve years. Chaney will serve on the Fiscal, Facilities, and Audit Committee.

MBA program quadruples

Enrollment in the Master of Business Administration program at 91���� has quadrupled over the past five years. Dr. August Bruehlman, business professor and department chair, said that 171 MBA students were enrolled in the fall of 2012 compared to 41 in the fall of 2007. He said the quality of the accredited program, which he and his fellow faculty members deliver, combined with the most reasonable cost in the country make the program extremely attractive to prospective students.

Art shows open

An art show featuring recent work in a variety of mediums created by CSC art faculty including Laura Bentz, Richard Bird, Mary Donahue, and Nancy Sharps opened today in the Main Gallery of Memorial Hall and will run through March 15. Donahue said that Daniel Binkard and Dewayne Gimeson, who have been an important part of expanding the program in photography and digital photography, are showing for the first time in the faculty show.

91���� President Randy Rhine has named Lisa Stein as the interim director of admissions. She assumed her duties today, Feb 11. Tena Cook, the former director, recently accepted a position as interim coordinator of marketing.

Student death saddens CSC community

The 91���� community is saddened by the death of freshman Sterling Atkins from Broken Bow, Neb.who passed away Saturday evening, Feb. 9.

Elmo on the ice at Rush game

91���� made a big splash at the Feb. 9 Rapid City Rush hockey game. Elmo, the eagle mascot of CSC, took to the spotlight dropping the puck for the start of the game between the Rush and the Arizona Sundogs. Open House brings visitors to campus Monday

Over 40 prospective students and their families plan to arrive on campus for the Eagle Open House February 18th. The families hail from Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota, Colorado, California, and Texas. The Admissions Office offers an open house each October and February.

Steinway concert set for Feb. 17

World Champion Bull Rider to speak at CSC

World Championship Bull Rider Charlie Sampson will be in Chadron Feb. 21 and 22 speaking as part of the college’s celebration of Black History Month. Sampson, a native of California who used horses as a way to escape violence, will be sharing his inspirational story with the public Feb. 21 in Memorial Hall at 7 p.m. Tickets are not required.

The college’s four indicators are all near or better than the national average. President Barak Obama announced the new scoring system in his recent State of the Union address.

Students remember their friend

About 30 91���� students gathered in the CSC Student Center Tuesday evening to remember their friend, Sterling Atkins, who died Feb. 9. Russ Seger, a Chadron pastor and adjunct faculty member who has expertise and a doctorate in the disciplines of death and dying, spoke to the group encouraging them to share stories. "It's healthy to gather and remember Sterling. The grief may not go away but it won't hurt as much if you tell stories and begin to manage the loss," he said.

From advice about choosing good friends and setting goals to a demo of proper bull riding techniques, Charlie Sampson, 1982 World Bull Riding Champion, entertained a large audience at Memorial Hall Thursday night.

Volunteers line up to help with The Big Event

A new tradition is starting at 91���� this spring. April 20 hundreds of CSC students, faculty, and staff will team up for “The Big Event.” This student-led community service project will focus on giving back to the community of Chadron for their continual support of CSC throughout the years, according to Shaunda French, assistant professor of communication at Chadron State.

LINCOLN, Neb. Wayne State College was the host site for the Nebraska State College System open education summit Feb. 10-12.

CSC faculty members seek grants

91���� faculty members are seeking five grants totaling over $250,000. The largest application, for $150,000, is intended to enhance students’ experience using GPS and Geographic Information Systems. Employers expect job applicants to demonstrate a proficiency level with GPS/GIS that could be reached with a technologically strengthened rangeland and agricultural curriculum, according to Dr. Chuck Butterfield, professor and department chair of Applied Sciences.

Shaunda French's Media Law class reached out to children in Kenwood elementary school March 1 to promote reading. The effort was part of the National Education Association's Read Across America campaign. "I think it's important for our students to engage with the community in service like this. I required it as part of my mid-term," said French.

“Life-changing” was the way Tad Henkenius described his experience on the 91���� Study Away Alaska 2013 trip. The Rangeland Management major from Neligh, Neb. said the highlights for him were intercultural exchanges, handling the Iditarod race dogs and visiting the Beryozova School which serves the Old Believers Russian community.

New tree planting, pruning, and placement will be the topics of the next 91���� Campus Arboretum Volunteers work day. CSC horticulturist Lucinda Mays said, “Trees start out small but they can take over a yard in just a few years. A well-placed shade tree can save about $250 a year on heating and cooling a home.”

53rd CSC Scholastic Contest another success

The 53rd annual 91���� Scholastic Contest hosted 49 high schools from three states and a total of 1,154 students who took over 40 different tests today. Activities provided for the students while they were not in tests included the human genome trivia scavenger hunt, poetry and prose readings, country swing dancing and a CSC football practice. The Eagle Cook-Off in a large food preparation lab in the Burkhiser building was attended by over 50 people.

IT Help Desk increases service to students

A dream the 91���� IT department has had for several years will be coming true April 9. The Help Desk will be moving from Miller Hall to the northwest section of the Reta E. King library main level to assist more students. There will be no interruption of service during the move.

Campus re-opened

On-Campus Registration session complete

About 20 incoming 91���� students and their families from Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, Montana, New York, Wyoming and South Dakota attended the first On-Campus Registration session of 2013 this week. The number was less than half the anticipated number due to winter storms and unsafe travel conditions in the region.

CSC receives $500,000 gift

The Chadron State Foundation received a $500,000 scholarship gift from Frances Hess Richards this week, according to Connie Rasmussen, executive director of the foundation. The gift will be added to the existing endowed scholarship established by Frances and her late husband, Wilber “Eby” Richards in 1995.

For the third consecutive year, The Eagle, the 91���� student newspaper, captured "Best in Overall Excellence" in the Newspaper Division of the Nebraska Collegiate Media Association's Golden Leaf Awards. The victory came Saturday at the association's annual conference, hosted by Doane College, Crete.

Exchange students volunteer to teach French

Exchange students Ferhat Imarazen from Algeria, Salah Eddine from Morocco and Nikolay Harutyunyan from Armenia had an idea when this semester started. They wanted to teach other 91���� students how to speak French. Imarazen said, “Nik was the one who really insisted and made it come true even though none of us had taught French before.”

FCS professor retires

Dr. Norma Nealeigh, Professor of Family and Consumer Sciences, has announced her retirement. She arrived at 91���� in the fall of 1994. She served as the Applied Sciences department chair for 11 of the last 19 years, president of the CSC Faculty Senate in 2004-2005 and secretary from 1997-2003. She has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses, and was the CSC commencement speaker for graduate ceremonies in May 2011.

Plant bed spruces up Burkhiser

About 600 native shrubs and 120 bunch grasses have been planted on the west-facing slope of the Burkhiser building over the past few weeks. The 11,000 square-foot plant bed was mulched with special shredded and chipped pine. The plants will be watered, in part, by snow and rain runoff captured in a 3,500-gallon cistern inside Burkhiser.

Phase II Rangeland Complex financing approved

The Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees met in Chadron Friday and approved bonding which will finance Phase II of the 91���� Rangeland Complex. The bonds will be issued in late November and will be paid off by the State of Nebraska over eight years.

Dr. Jesse Sealey, assistant professor of education, spoke to the Chadron Rotary International group recently about his Group Study Exchange experience in Brazil this past summer. A main focus of the Rotary trip was to tour various schools.

Forgiveness topic of latest Graves Lecture

New faculty in Military Science and Leadership program

Changes are taking place in the 91���� Army ROTC program which started in the fall of 2008 with six cadets and now has 34. The goal of the program is to achieve and maintain an enrollment of 40 and commission six Second Lieutenants each year.

Nebraska State College System announces Counseling Excellence Award

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska State College System has named Fran Hassler the eighth NSCS Counseling Excellence Award recipient. Hassler, who has been the guidance counselor at Ponca High School since 1995, served as a home economics teacher at PHS prior to becoming a guidance counselor.
