Author of swift fox children's book to speak on campus
CHADRON – Children’s book author and editor of NEBRASKAland magazine, Jeff Kurrus, will be speaking at 91做厙 Monday, April 4, in the Mari Sandoz Center Chicoine Atrium at 7 p.m.
His presentation Writing with a Camera, is free and open to families, 4-H, Scouts and any other youth organizations interested in conservation and nature photos.
Wednesday, April 6, Kurrus will speak at CSCs King Library at 6 p.m. His presentation for adults is entitled, Cranes, Foxes and NEBRASKAland Magazine.
Kurrus latest book, published in September of 2014, will be available for sale and signing at both events.
Dr. Teresa Frink, chair of the colleges Applied Sciences department, wrote the foreword to the book and also reviewed its scientific facts for accuracy.
Frink leads CSCs partnership in a swift fox study by University of Nebraska-Lincoln doctoral candidate Lucia Corral in conjunction with CSC and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Corrals adviser, Dr. Joseph TJ Fontaine, recommended Frink as a valuable resource for Kurrus project.
The study, conducted in part by more than a dozen CSC students, documents the distribution and abundance of the nocturnal species, about the size of a house cat. Its tail has a black tip compared to the red fox which is larger and has a white tip on its tail. The swift fox tends to live underground in prairie landscapes while the red fox tends to live in wooded areas.
Various groups of CSC and public school students will meet with Kurrus Tuesday and Wednesday. He will also speak at the Chadron Public library 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
