Classical music will be presented by the 91°µÍø music department during its woodwind chamber music recital Wednesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chicoine Atrium of the Sandoz Center. The concert is open to the public free of charge. Three ensembles and five soloists will present music by classical composers, including Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Vivaldi, Moussorgsky, Milhaud, Schumann and Lutoslawski.

Something new — a combined conference of the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society and the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum — will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday March 27–29 at 91°µÍø. The program will be open to the public, but it is especially designed for devotees of Sandoz’s works, gardeners at all levels, landowners, homeowners, horticulturists and those new to the region.

Thirty-eight high school and elementary students from Dawes and Sioux counties will compete in Nebraska’s western district section of the National History Day competition at 91°µÍø on Saturday, March 15. The competition begins at 9 a.m. in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center and is expected to end before noon. The awards ceremony will be at 1:30 p.m.

Mike Her Many Horses, an independent scholar from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, will speak about finding Crazy Horse’s relatives during a presentation at 91°µÍø on Tuesday, March 18. The presentation will be in room 108 of the Reta King Library at 7 p.m. as part of the Dorset Graves Lecture Series.

91°µÍø will be all jazzed up Saturday, March 15. New Orleans jazz musician Delfeayo Marsalis and his quintet will perform in Memorial Hall at 7:30 p.m. Earlier in the day, the Chadron State music department will play host to the Jazz Festival for high school students.

The 26th annual 91°µÍø Chess Open will be Saturday, March 15, in the upstairs lobby of the Kline Center. The tournament is open to any chess player. Dr. Ron Miller, a CSC professor who is organizing the tournament, said participants should bring standard chess pieces and board, and, if available, a chess clock. He said they should arrive before 10 a.m.

The bands in the Chadron Public Schools will join with the 91°µÍø wind symphony to present a concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 in Memorial Hall. Approximately 180 musicians will be involved. There will be no admission charge. Joe Rischling is the director of the Chadron Schools’ bands and Dr. Adam Lambert directs the Chadron State ensemble.

One of the 34 schools registered for the annual Teacher Interview Day at CSC on Friday, March 14, is the Northern Slope Borough School District of Barrow, Alaska. Janet Hartman, CSC internship and career services office assistant, said the district from Alaska’s northern coast is seeking elementary teachers.

“Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country,” a traveling exhibit opening at 91°µÍø on Monday, March 10, tells the story of the explorers’ historic 1804–1806 expedition from a different point of view -- that of the American Indians who lived along their route.
